During the Spring semester, Nancy began collecting data for her PhD dissertation. Then a big bomb was dropped when the Acting Department Chairman called me into his office and told me that after the following year my contract would not be renewed. What a shock. I had never been fired from any job I had ever had. There was no reason given and the Acting Chairman would not elaborate, he said he wasn’t required to do so, except to say that the tenured members of the department voted unanimously to terminate my contract. We had been working on a 3-year contract and I would not be given a new 3-year contract, although Nancy would be. So I was fired for no given reason and given a one-year terminal contract as specified in the original contract. Nancy had to collect data for her dissertation so she had to stay no matter what I decided to do.
